As spring adorns the landscape in vibrant colors, more and more Suraye from the diaspora, including people belonging to the Assyrian, Chaldean, and Syriac communities and churches, gather in Iraq to celebrate Akitu, a time-honored tradition signifying unity and rejuvenation. This year’s festivities welcomed hundreds from the diaspora, marking a poignant reunion and strengthening bonds across generations and borders.

The celebrations, held in Duhok, Erbil, and several villages, brought forth a jubilant atmosphere with music, dance, and cultural displays. In Duhok, the streets resonated with the traditional parade, live performances, and joyful gatherings, while Erbil’s Chaldean International League hosted a vibrant festival showcasing the rich heritage of the community. Meanwhile, in Ankawa, the Syriac Heritage Festival captivated attendees with its array of cultural activities and displays, creating an unforgettable experience for all.

For Gishru Alumni, Ankawa’s historic district provided a glimpse into the rich tapestry of our heritage. Guided by The Return’s team, they explored landmarks and engaged with recent returnees who have chosen to make Iraq their home once again. Akitu’s essence lies in its celebration of resilience, encapsulating the collective strength of our community in the face of challenges.

As the sun sets on another Akitu, this celebration reaffirms the unity of our communities, both in the homeland and in the diaspora. Through moments of joy and fellowship, connections that transcend borders are forged, reaffirming our shared identity and heritage.

With optimism, the community takes pride in knowing that its traditions will endure in the homeland for generations to come, serving as a beacon of hope and resilience for the future.
